Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit provides students with an understanding of the theoretic and practical issues related to the application of enterprise systems within organisations. It demonstrates how enterprise systems integrate information and organisational processes across functional areas with a unified system comprised of a single database and shared reporting tools.

Enterprise systems, by their multi-dimensional integrative nature, offer the depth of functionality and breadth of integration to demonstrate how global operations of organisations are managed. Students, therefore, will gain an appreciation of the scope of enterprise systems and the motivation for implementing them.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

Mode: Attendance mode 

Duration: 12-week semester or equivalent. Students should anticipate undertaking 150 hours of study for this unit, including class attendance, readings, exams, and assessment preparation. 

Students will have access to all primary learning materials online through Canvas, along with formative and summative assessments, all of which will be available online, to provide a learning experience beyond the classroom. While there are no formal classroom lectures for this unit, students will be required to attend weekly three-hour workshops, which will include lecture and specific tasks related to achievement of the unit learning outcomes. 

Assessment strategy and rationale

In order to pass this unit, you are required to submit all pieces of assessment and achieve an overall mark of at least 50% when the results from all assessment tasks are added together.

Task1: Written report based on discussion forum  

The student will participate in online discussion forum to understand complex concepts through reflection and collaboration. The students are expected conduct further research on a discussion topic and to write a report reflecting their understanding of the concepts.

Task2: Term test  

The aim of this assessment is to evaluate the students’ understanding of the theoretical and practical issues related to the application of enterprise architecture within organisations.

Task 3: Practical- Case Study Analysis  

The purpose of this assessment is to assess whether the students are able to evaluate the costs and benefits of implementing an enterprise system in an  

organisation and investigate the major enterprise system software providers and their packaged systems. Students are also required to apply their knowledge and skills to ensure environmental stewardship and ethical compliance.
